What are the dangers of a mobile plant?
A mobile plant, such as cranes, bulldozers, and forklifts, can pose serious dangers to operators if not used properly. A laborer died on an agricultural property in November 2022. The worker was operating a front-end loader. They were ejected from the cabin and run over by the equipment, receiving fatal injuries.
Risks also include but are not limited to:
- the plant overturning
- things falling on the operator of the plant
- the plant colliding or coming into contact with any person or thing (e.g. workers, other vehicles or plant, powerlines)
- mechanical or other failures (e.g. hydraulic failures, release of hazardous substances).
How to take appropriate precautions?
The following are some steps to avoid that could prevent injuries or even death:
- Proper training: Make sure the operator has proper training and certifications on the specific mobile plant they will be using.
- Pre-operation inspection: Inspect the mobile plant before use to ensure it is in good working order and identify any potential hazards.
- PPE: Provide the operator with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). This includes hard hats, safety glasses, and high-visibility clothing.
- Load limitations: Follow the load limitations for the mobile plant and make sure the load is secure.
- Stability: Avoid uneven surfaces, sharp turns, and sudden movements that can destabilise the mobile plant and cause it to tip over.
- Awareness of surroundings: Keep the operator aware of their surroundings, including other workers and any obstacles in the area.
- Emergency procedures: Train the operator on emergency procedures, such as how to evacuate the mobile plant if it begins to tip over.
